 REQ. 6a: Req. 6(a) Explain how a government is represented abroad and how the United States government is accredited to international organizations.


STATE DEPARTMENT
The Department of State is the main agency responsible for planning and implementing U.S. foreign policy to manage relationships with other countries.

ADVISE & REPRESENT
The primary reason for this agency is to advise the president and represent American interests globally.

INFORMAL “AMBASSADORS”
In contrast to official politicians, regular travelers and Olympic athletes also act as ambassadors, representing American citizenship through their actions everyday.

FOREIGN ASSISTANCE
Furthermore, the government uses foreign assistance programs, like USAID, to provide economic and humanitarian aid to developing nations.

Req 6(b) Describe the roles of the following in the conduct of foreign relations: ambassador, consul, Bureau of Global Public Affairs, United States and Foreign Commercial Service.


AMBASSADOR

Consequently, the government sends an ambassador, a high-ranking diplomat who lives in a foreign capital to represent the president officially. 


CONSUL

In contrast to this political leader, a consul operates in smaller cities to protect American citizens and boost local trade. 


BUREAU OF GLOBAL PUBLIC AFFAIRS

Furthermore, the Bureau of Global Public Affairs explains these policies to the global public, 


THE FOREIGN COMMERCIAL SERVICE

while the Foreign Commercial Service helps American businesses sell products overseas. 


Req 6(c) Explain the purpose of a passport and visa for international travel.


PASSPORT

Consequently, a citizen needs a passport, which is an official government booklet proving nationality and granting safe passage overseas. 


VISA

In contrast to this document from your own government, you may also need a visa, a special permission seal stamped by a foreign country allowing you to cross their borders.

MY LAST ARGUMENT (Don't worry, it's an aspirational goal!) If we argue with each other online over issues important to our personal identity, our core personal moral integrity, or one of our reference group loyalties  (eg., family, faith, football team 🙂) then one of us will win and one will lose or, more likely, we will both lose.
