Requirement 6 CHALLENGE (CitWorld)

CHALLENGE

Numbered Heads Together

This structure eliminates the "one student dominates" problem by holding every single Scout accountable for knowing the material.

  • The Setup: At their three tables, Scouts number themselves off from 1 to 7.

  • The Action: Provide a specific question based on the handouts (e.g., "Describe some types of INFORMAL “AMBASSADORS”"). The table has 5 minutes to read the handout and ensure everyone at the table can answer the question perfectly.

  • The Reveal: Call out a random number (e.g., "All Number 4s stand up"). Only those Scouts can answer the question for their team. I will have the “Number 4s” come to the Challenge Desk one at a time.

  • As tables are successful, their Scouts will be credited with 6(a) and move on to 6(b) and ultimately 6(c).

  • If not, I will have the Scout return with instructions on how to improve the answer.

  • I will stress it’s not a contest. Their “adversary” is the clock, not the other tables. In the end, when they qualify, they qualify.

Validation

  • The Evidence: Because the Scouts do not know whose number will be called, the older or more prepared Scouts are highly motivated to coach the younger or less prepared Scouts during the huddle. [3]
